Our story

StoryTaler was co-founded in 2015 by Prof. Winnie Mak from the Department of Psychology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, together with Clinical Psychologist Dr. Amanda Li. In 2019, we were formally registered as a social enterprise.

We are dedicated to mental health advocacy, reducing psychiatric stigma, labelling, discrimination and misunderstanding that surround mental health. We believe that we can all be our self mental health advocate and for one another.

We are a diverse and caring community made up of people with mental health challenges, clinical psychologists, clinical psychologist trainees, people with psychological training, and individuals who are passionate about mental wellbeing. We are all supported by an international advisory board, a group of professionals and advocates from around the world who offer thoughtful guidance and reflection. Their presence helps our work stay rooted in both global perspectives and local lived realities.

Through social media, we actively share lived experience stories to promote mental health awareness. We have grown a following of over 40,000, with a total reach of more than 2 million people. Beyond online story sharing,  we also host a range of initiatives, including public exhibitions, Instagram Live sessions, StoryTelling Days, webinar, seminar, workplace and university workshops, and Mental Health advocacy training programme.  So far, our work has reached over 20,000 participants across the public, private, and NGOs sectors.
