STORYTELLING DAYs

How do you perceive the term “Mental Disorder”?

There are many misconceptions surrounding mental illness, often associating it with out of control, irrationality, or abnormality. These misunderstandings perpetuate stereotypes, such as “mental illness equals insanity or danger,” and stigmatize individuals as “crazy” or “dirty.” These labels can isolate people with lived experience in the society.

"When you think of mental illness, what comes to mind?"

Since 2015, StoryTaler has organized Storytelling Days - a platform for story sharings of people with lived experience. The goal is to create connections between people with lived experience and the public via dialogues. These story sharings allow participants to understand more the inner struggles of people with lived experience throughout the journeys in order to enhance their mental health awareness. Moreover, each story sharing serves as a reminder that people with lived experience may have unique journeys, yet we all share a common humanity and deserve to be treated with equal respect and dignity.

Each story of people with lived experience is not only a narrative of overcoming challenges but also a great presentation of individuality. Stereotypes often equate mental disorder with weakness or abnormality. However, these shared stories reveal that such experiences are part of our growth. They emphasize the importance of empowerment, the pursuit of equality, and the preservation of dignity and humanity.

Everyone deserves to be seen. Let us work together to eliminate stigma, raise awareness of mental health, and support the voices of people with lived experience!
