In 2015, while pursuing her Master’s in Clinical Psychology, Amanda Li noticed that public discussions around mental health were largely dominated by professional voices — with few opportunities to hear directly from those with mental health challenges. A thought quietly emerged within her: what if these conversations were led together with people who had been through it themselves? Wouldn’t that be more genuine, more powerful?
This idea found its way into the heart of Professor Winnie Mak, from the Department of Psychology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. As a scholar who had long been dedicated to academic research and anti-stigma advocacy, Professor Mak deeply resonated with Amanda’s vision. Together, they began to imagine a co-creation platform — one where people with mental health challenges would no longer be seen merely as subjects to be listened to, but as the protagonists of their own stories, and as advocates walking alongside others.
This was the beginning of StoryTaler —
a storytelling platform rooted in the experience of mental health challenges,
a space where mental health can be seen, understood, and held with care.
